What does a video producer do?

A video producer is responsible for overseeing the creation of video content. This includes developing a creative concept, budgeting, scripting, casting, directing, shooting, editing, and final video delivery. You’ll work on a team responsible for ensuring that the finished product meets the desired quality standards, stays within budget, and meets the agreed-upon deadline.

What will I learn in school to work in video production?

In school for video production, you will learn technical skills such as operating cameras, lighting equipment, sound recording devices, and editing software.

Additionally, you will gain knowledge of visual storytelling, including how to use design principles and film conventions to help convey a narrative. The pre-production process will also include developing ideas, creating content, and planning production. You will be taught to shoot and record video, audio, and still images during production. In post-production, you will learn editing and assembling techniques, sound design, color grading, and how to add special effects. Effective communication and collaboration with a team of actors, writers, directors, and other production personnel are also emphasized to achieve the desired outcome.

What degree do you need for a career in video production?

A degree in video production or a related field such as film, communication, or media studies is commonly pursued if you seek a career in video production. However, a bachelor’s degree is not always necessary, as many employers value hands-on experience and technical skills over education. It is possible to enter the field through an apprenticeship, a technical training program, or by building a portfolio and gaining experience on your own. Ultimately, the most important factor for success in video production is a strong portfolio that showcases your skills and experience.

Certificate Option

You can enroll directly in the videography certificate program with a bachelor's degree. This option eliminates the general education requirements of the AAS degree and allows you to focus purely on videography training. Students who do not have a degree will need to choose an Associate Degree Option.
