Chemistry—the study of how matter and energy interact—is an essential topic if you pursue an education in a scientific field such as biology, physics, geology, environmental science, health careers, engineering, industry, and more. Chemistry is the "central science" for its connecting role among multiple disciplines. A foundation in chemistry will help you understand the world around you and improve your ability to make informed decisions through its emphasis on objective reasoning and problem-solving.

At Elgin Community College, your studies in chemistry will include qualitative and quantitative fundamentals and the practical aspects of chemistry in various career fields, including chemical technicians, quality control analysts, food scientists, health and safety engineers, and more.

Getting a Job in Chemistry

You will need at least a bachelor's degree to work as a chemist. The US Department of Labor estimates that careers in chemistry are projected to grow 6 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations.
