2022 - Two ECC Students Win Awards at Phi Theta Kappa National Conference

Elgin Community College students and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members Elizabeth Barnes (West Dundee) and Jackson Stoneman (St. Charles) were granted Distinguished Officer and Member awards at the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst convention on April 7 to 9 in Denver, Colorado. The annual event brings together members, advisors, and their supporters for professional development and to celebrate the accomplishments of the Phi Theta Kappa community.

Barnes was awarded the Distinguished Officer Award, recognizing her time and effort in leadership. “It’s always a team effort with all that PTK does, said Barnes. With the sense of belonging and forming a family, everyone chips in to help one another. Even at the event and seeing people from across the country was amazing because we all share a common thread on doing this work,” said Barnes.

Stoneman was awarded the Distinguished Member Award for his recognizable effort in putting in many volunteer hours, which is not required for members, only officers. “I assumed the role of an officer at the time without actually being one. I was already volunteering in the Spartan Pantry, so it was natural for me to continue that role as a leader. I like being there in the pantry for people who need something. It’s important to have at community college,” said Stoneman.
