Elgin Community College’s Catherine Moushon, MA, professor of mathematics, was honored with the Max Beberman Mathematics Educators Award this past October from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM). This award honors one outstanding person each year who has made significant contributions to the field of mathematics education through research, curriculum design, or teacher training.

“I am thrilled beyond words to be honored with this award,” said Moushon. “I thank Wendy Miller for the nomination, the ECC mathematics department, especially Kenny Beynon, Dan Kernler, and Nicole Scherger, for their support for this award, and all the students who have taught me so much in my years of service at ECC.”

In addition to being a member of ECC’s math department, Moushon has served as the Phi Mu Epsilon Faculty Advisor and president of the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges (IMACC). Additional winners of the Max Beberman award include professors from the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago. This is the first award given to a community college professor.

“Catherine Moushon is an amazing faculty member who has dedicated her career to providing top-notch math instruction to students and improving the overall quality of math education in Illinois,” said Wendy Miller, EdD, dean of health professions, math, science, and engineering. “She has been a mentor to many of her colleagues, and we are blessed to have her teaching talent in ECC’s math department. We are so proud of Catherine for being recognized by ICTM for this award, a prestigious honor that is certainly well-deserved!”
