Michelle Kershner, MEd, professor of mathematics, is a 2021 recipient of the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty award. One of only 23 recipients nationwide, the award is recognition for faculty members making a difference in the community college classroom.

Award criteria include demonstrating passion for the students and the classroom, show a willingness to support students inside and outside of the classroom, be inclined to participate in college committees and go above and beyond what is required to ensure that students are successful in their academic endeavors.

“I am honored and humbled to receive the American Association of Community Colleges’ Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award,” said Kershner. “While I appreciate the individual recognition, this award is as much a reflection of ECC and the Math Department's commitment to excellence. I am grateful to be a part of this exceptional institution.”

Michelle continually searches for new ways to engage students and foster a learner-centered classroom by attending conferences, collaborating with colleagues, and taking graduate courses,” said Peggy Heinrich, EdD, vice president of teaching, learning, and student development. “From putting in the extra work needed to get innovative initiatives off the ground to taking the time to truly connect with her students, she exemplifies Elgin Community College’s mission of improving lives through learning.”

Kershner was chosen to serve as ECC's nominee for the AACC’s Distinguished Faculty award after being the top-scoring faculty nominee to receive the 2020 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Award in December.

Recognition for Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty will take place on May 20, 2021, from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Eastern via AACC Digital.
