2021 - Black Lives Matter series at ECC explores critical race theory

Elgin Community College’s Multicultural and Global Initiatives Committee (MAGIC) presents Part 8 of the series, “Black Lives Matter,” on Tuesday, November 30, at 2 pm. The discussion will take place via Zoom and is open to the public to attend.  Join on Zoom. Meeting ID: 988 5963 4502. 

“This concept, ‘Critical Race Theory,’ that began in the 70s is misunderstood by most and misused by some. We invite our community to come to learn for themselves what Critical Race Theory is and what it is not,” said Susan Timm, EdD, professor of business and MAGIC co-chair.

Panelists include Vernese Edgehill-Walden, PhD, vice president of academic diversity, equity, and inclusion from Northern Illinois University; Junaid Afeef, JD, elected school board member of District 301; and Mia Hardy, PhD, professor of sociology at ECC. Local librarians will also be on hand to provide information and resources.

“We expect participants will leave the session better informed as we attempt to clear up often-held misconceptions about Critical Race Theory,” said Clark Hallpike, MBA, professor of business, and MAGIC co-chair.  

Out of respect for the voices of those who will be sharing, MAGIC is asking participants to simply listen. Throughout the event, comments and questions can be made in the virtual chat room. At the end of the program, some of the questions from the chat will be answered. After that point, there will be opportunities for those who would like to share their own experiences as well.

The MAGIC Black Lives Matters series is presented in partnership with BEST (Black Employee Support Team), ECC Police Department, ECC Renner Academic Library, Student Life, and TIDE (Teaching/Learning Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity), along with the Elgin Police Department and Gail Borden Public Library. The event is limited to 300 participants, however, the session will be recorded and made available to the public afterward.

ECC’s Multicultural and Global Initiatives Committee aims to prepare individuals to succeed in a diverse society by providing and supporting multicultural learning experiences at Elgin Community College and within District 509 with the ultimate goal of creating an inclusive environment at the college.
