Nursing Program Admissions

All nursing applicants must complete the following steps before applying for admission to the nursing program:

• Apply to ECC - how to apply
• Meet with an ECC academic advisor to develop a course plan.
• Request an official evaluation of prior high school or college transcripts.
• Review nursing program admission policies
• Take prerequisite courses.
• Complete and submit health professions application

Nursing Program Admission Screening Process

The Nursing Program uses a competitive admission procedure. Approximately 60 students are admitted each fall and spring semester. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all admission materials are submitted by the deadline and that all admission requirements have been met. Admission deadlines are January 15 to start in the fall semester and August 15 to start in the spring semester. Incomplete applications will not be screened. Applications will be ranked according to the following criteria:

Nursing Program Prerequisites

• Grade of C or better in BIO 110 or transfer credit equivalent to BIO 110
  • A = 9 pts, B = 6 pts, C = 3 pts
• Grade of C or better in BIO 245 or equivalent (completed within the last 10 years)
  • A = 9 pts, B = 6 pts, C = 3 pts
• Grade of C or better in BIO 246 or equivalent (completed within the last 10 years)
  • A = 9 pts, B = 6 pts, C = 3 pts
• Grade of C or better in PSY 100 or equivalent
  • A = 5 pts, B = 3 pts, C = 1 pt
• Grade of C or better in PSY 218 or equivalent
  • A = 5 pts, B = 3 pts, C = 1 pt

Note: Students who have completed the additional nursing program courses listed below will earn extra points toward their admission score. Any courses Not Attempted before admission into the nursing program must be completed with grades of C or better while enrolled in the nursing program.

Admissions Process

Nursing admission screenings will occur after the January 15 and August 15 deadlines. The screening process takes approximately six weeks. Students will be notified of their status (admitted, waiting list, or requirements incomplete) via email after the screening is complete. The following policies also apply:

• Applicants MUST be legal residents of Community College District 509. Working in District 509 does not meet this requirement. International students on an F-1 visa are not eligible to apply to the nursing program.
• To complete the program, students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in all nursing and general education courses.
• Students are required to attend a mandatory nursing orientation session after acceptance into the program.
• Students must provide their own uniforms and transportation to and from all clinical sites. Students must submit medical forms and required titers tests and immunizations, health insurance, American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) CPR certification, and complete the drug testing and criminal background check through the CastleBranch system within 45 days before the first day of class in the nursing program. Students demonstrating a positive drug test will be denied admission to the nursing program. Students demonstrating a positive background check may not be allowed to start nursing classes based on the background check results. Students demonstrating a positive background check or annual drug test while enrolled in the nursing program may be dismissed.
• The most recent version of the nursing student handbook outlines other nursing program student policies.

Note: Health professions programs require criminal background checks, drug testing, and specific medical requirements including updated vaccinations, current CPR, and PT program students must have a driver’s license. Students demonstrating a positive background check or positive drug test will be denied admission to health professions programs. Students demonstrating a positive background check or positive drug test while enrolled in health professions programs will be dismissed from the program.
